Cathay Pacific forms Aviation Climate Task Force
The non-profit organization will develop new technologies to decarbonise aviation.
Cathay Pacific has formed the Aviation Climate Task Force together with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and other airline leaders in its bid to decarbonise the aviation sector.
The aviation sector contributed less than 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions annually before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airline said ACT, which is a non-profit organization, will take a “portfolio approach,” and focus on creating near-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions to eliminate carbon emissions in aviation.
These solutions include the use of synthetic fuel, emerging bio-based SAF pathways, and other hydrogen technologies.
As a founding member of the ACT, the airlines said they recognise the importance of “of working with different sectors to develop the kinds of radically new technologies that will be required to decarbonise airline operations.”
Prior to the formation of the ACT, Cathay Pacific has been involved in decarbonisation efforts, becoming the first airline investor of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) developer Fulcrum BioEnergy in 2014. Recently, it also committed to using SAF for 10% of its total fuel consumption by 2030.
