HKIA passenger traffic up 8.5% to 6.39m in March

The Easter travel peak resulted in higher passenger volumes.

Hong Kong International Airport passenger volume rose 8.5% YoY to 6.39m passengers in March as travellers took advantage of the Easter holiday, according to a press release.

Domestic resident travel, which increased 18% YoY, buoyed this month’s figures whilst passenger traffic to and from Mainland China and Japan registered significant increases.

Flight movements edged up 2.8% YoY to 36,240 but cargo throughput dipped 2.5% to 422,000 tonnes amidst a 12% drop in exports.

Amongst key trading regions, South Korea and Europe registered the most significant drop in cargo throughput in March.

Despite the slight decline, Hong Kong holds the title of the world's largest air cargo center in 2017 after handling over 5m metric tonnes of cargo.

“It is a tremendous honour to win these accolades. Credit goes to the more than 73,000 airport staff who work diligently every day to serve our passengers. HKIA will continue to work closely with its business partners to maintain smooth and efficient operations and provide a world-class airport experience,” said Airport Operations of Airport Authority Hong Kong executive director C K Ng.
