Hong Kong’s budget airlines on high-growth trajectory
Could account for 15% of all seats by 2015.
Aviation industry sources said these budget airlines or low-cost carriers today constitute some 5% of all seats at Hong Kong. Tripling this percentage seems likely because of the increasing number of budget airlines.
Among these carriers are Jetstar Hong Kong, China’s Spring Airlines and Dragonair. There are indications that Hong Kong Express Airways will transform itself into a budget airline.
Growth is expected to continue with the completion of a third runway at the Hong Kong International Airport. Unless completed, budget airlines face a no growth scenario in the coming years, said analysts.
