Gammon Construction bags Infrastructure Technology - Industrial Construction win at HKB Technology Excellence Awards 2022
The technology provided significant advantages to the work and standardised the construction sequence.
Construction firm Gammon Construction has brought home the Infrastructure Technology - Industrial Construction category win at the recently held Hong Kong Business Technology Excellence Awards 2022 for its application of leading strategies and technologies in the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) construction project for the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP).
In the HKSTP’s AMC construction project, leading strategies and technologies have been widely applied, including design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA), common data environment, and the Internet of Things.
Using entirely the DfMA approach not only standardised the construction sequence, but also provided significant advantages to the work in terms of safety, quality, and delivery of the programme. Gammon employed DfMA mainly for structural steel and facade works, the precast double tee concrete slab, service models and superstructure works.
This resulted in an achievement of 75 % off-site prefabrication of the structural steel works, 70% off-site modularisation of the works, and the MEP balcony was even 100 % prefabricated in a bolt-and-nut approach to reduce working at height.
To mitigate the risk of time delays and ensure security of the construction programme, the main contractor used a modular approach for the SDCS plant rooms, including duct work, pipe work, headers, and pipe-chilling accessories.
Another notable innovation is the adoption of the multi-trade integrated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MiMEP) approach in the smoke extraction plant rooms on the 8/F and rooftop. MiMEP embraces three key principles: off-site prefabrication, multi-trade integration, and module maximisation, as well as “plug and play.” Therefore, all MEP materials and equipment were pre-assembled off-site, including all the cable wiring works, which is the “plug and play” function.
Advantages resulted in on-site time savings of 30 days and reduced labour by some 30%. Gammon Construction hopes MiMEP will be widely used industry-wide in the future to tackle the shortage of skilled manpower and an ageing workforce.
