Smooth sailing with robots and Rhenus Logistics Hong Kong Limited

The company wins Innovator of the Year - Logistics at the 2022 HKB Management Excellence Awards.

Making sure supply chains run at optimal levels requires solutions that cater to a wide range of industries and needs found all along the supply chain. Rhenus Logistics Hong Kong Limited’s multimodal transport, warehousing, customs clearance, and innovative value-added services are offered to clients, netting Rhenus the Innovator of the Year - Logistics Award at the 2022 HKB Management Excellence Awards.

The awards programme recognises major players and key business leaders for HK businesses, and Rhenus Logistics distinguished themselves from their competition with the Rhenus Innovation Hub (RIH), the result of their innovative ideas and forward thinking that has led to continuous growth and success.

Dennis Mak, currently the Director of Warehousing Solutions and Distribution for Rhenus Logistics Greater China, spearheaded the initiative to turn the concept of RIH into reality by building the foundation needed to establish their own platform that fosters ideation and new technology.

Before RIH, the idea of Rhenus Integrated Solutions and Engineering (RISE) was the first one to spring up, pushing for the creation of an “in-plant” 3PL and 4PL SaaS solution product with comprehensive implementation service. Years of warehousing expertise and talents poured into development resulted in a subscription-based all-in-one solution that covers operational and technological aspects of a client's business and eliminates the need to purchase licenses or hire technical staff.

From RISE, another innovation came in the form of Rhenus’ first Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) warehouse, located in the Rhenus Innovation Hub in Yuen Long. AMR technology proved to be a formidable game-changer with its enhanced service productivity, picking accuracy, and improved warehouse safety that made it applicable to support some of Rhenus’ customers’ operations.

With RIH, Rhenus was able to achieve better service portfolio thanks to their new product and smart warehouse, which have had a positive impact on their business and provided more opportunities to tackle different requirements in new projects that help widen revenue streams.

The key factor in Rhenus’ success in delivering effective warehousing solutions to clients relies on comparing pre- and post-implementation data that provides insights on how to fine-tune solutions to maximise efficiency and productivity. In the case of AMR warehouses, picking efficiency improved by 200%, reflecting good returns on investment in the technology.

With the implementation of RIH, Rhenus Logistics was able to reach milestones in the past year and establish its reputation as an active and ambitious industry player in Hong Kong logistics. Spearheaded by their AMR warehouse and technology-driven plans in the pipeline, the company looks towards the future with optimism that their innovations will continue to bring revenue and success, as demonstrated by their win at the HKB Management Excellence Awards 2022.
