Ashurst’s Hong Kong office balances privacy and teamwork

The workplace features spaces for socials and quiet work to boost productivity.

At Ashurst LLP’s office in Hong Kong, lawyers and clients are welcomed to a dynamic space designed to foster collaboration and enhance work focus.

As a global law firm, Ashurst’s Jardine House office balances privacy and connection by offering spaces suited for different needs — from social gatherings to private focus rooms.

“The Hong Kong office features a modern, open-plan design that promotes collaboration, innovation, and employee well-being, as well as emphasising our client-centric approach,” Ben Hammond, office managing partner at Ashurst Hong Kong, told Hong Kong Business.

He said there is evidence that a balanced mix of spaces in an office boosts productivity. That is why the law firm’s office includes private and semi-private areas, bookable and ad hoc meeting rooms, as well as collaborative and individual quiet spaces.

For employees who need to concentrate, focus rooms and pods offer privacy and a quiet work environment. There are also phone booths for private conversations.

Additionally, team rooms with enclosed spaces are available for collaborative tasks and meetings. “The office also features a multipurpose wellness room, dedicated to supporting personal well-being and providing a space for employees to recharge,” Hammond said.

With a vision of “outpacing change,” the office also includes a central shared zone — a flexible space for socials, team-building, fitness and well-being, and client events.

The zone is an employee favourite because it fosters a sense of community and promotes collaboration.

There are also client meeting rooms and a boardroom with integrated audio-video equipment and flexible configurations for different setups. Outside the quiet rooms, the office uses passive acoustics to cut ambient noise and improve concentration.

After its lease expired, Ashurst considered moving elsewhere but decided to stay at Jardine House to maintain familiarity with clients and avoid disrupting operations.

“This move was also seen as an opportunity to update and upgrade the office environment, manifesting our pledge to be the most progressive global law firm,” Hammond said.

The redesigned office also values health by featuring a modern workspace that supports future growth, enhanced technology, and increased natural light and air circulation.

The office prioritises ergonomics, with adjustable sit-to-stand desks and dual monitors equipped with integrated webcams.

“Our Hong Kong office balances expert local knowledge with international experience, [supporting both] established giants [and] growing start-ups on cross-border investments, transactions, and capital raisings, as well as dispute resolution and regulatory advice,” he added.
