Eyes on the east for Tung Chung expansion
Following changes in government’s land reclamation plan.
In response to environment groups’ calls, the government has dropped its land reclamation plan in West Tung Chung.
According to a research note from Barclays, however, instead it plans to increase the building density in the east.
The revised plan for Tung Chung expansion was unveiled for public consultation.
Here’s more from Barclays:
The plan aims to boost the population from 80,000 to 260,000 in the district.
For the west side, the previous idea of reclaiming 14 hectares was abandoned after environment groups’ calls for protection of the ecology of Tung Chung Bay.
On the east side, the plan to reclaim 120-hectares of land stays unchanged, but with high-density developments and a new population of 117,000.
The proposed plot ratios for both residential and commercial zones are raised by the government.
In particular, the commercial office floor area was increased from 200,000 to 500,000sqm to create more jobs for the new town.
For the residential development, the new plan is to build a total of 48,000 units with 62% as public housing and 38% as private housing.
