
Hong Kong mid-year population up 0.8% to 7.45 million
Birth numbers (55,000) outweighed mortality rates (47,300).
Population figures in Hong Kong inched up by 0.8% YoY to 7,448,900 in mid-2018, according to the Census & Statistics Department.
The number of births was able to outweigh that of deaths at 55,000 births versus 47,300 deaths, indicating a mild improvement in the city’s historically low fertility rate levels.

Over the same period, there was a net movement of 49, 600 persons, of which 41,000 were inflow of One-way Permit holders and 8,500 were net inflow of other Hong Kong residents.
The SAR’s ageing population is fast catching up to Japan’s silver demographic amidst expectations that Hong Kongers aged 65 and above is expected to account for over a fourth (26.4%) of the total population by 2036, according to the C&SD.

In mid-2018, the number of usual residents was 7,228,100 and the number of mobile residents was 220,800.
