
Hong Kong's population to hit 7.67m by 2021

According to a report, Hong Kong's population will rise to 7.67 million by 2021.
The Planning Department today published the Population Distribution Projections 2013-2021 report, which presents the latest population distribution projections.
The population of the New Territories and Kowloon will increase by 385,000 and 229,000 between 2011 and 2021, reaching 4.08 million and 2.34 million, while that of Hong Kong Island will decrease marginally from 1.27 million to 1.25 million during the same period.
The projections are based on the latest data released by the Census & Statistics Department last July.
In terms of share of the total population, the New Territories will rise from 52% to 53%, while Kowloon will rise from 30% to 31%. The share of Hong Kong Island will decrease from 18% to 16%.
The report also presents projected populations for District Council districts. Sha Tin, Yuen Long and Kwun Tong Districts are projected to be the largest districts in 2021, with populations reaching 712,000, 690,000 and 683,000.
Yuen Long will experience the greatest growth, with 111,000 more people in 2021 than in 2011.
