Towngas installs governor kiosks with IoT and solar energy
The kiosks, now known as smart governors, will be doubled to 200 next year.
Gas pipeline network, Towngas, installed smart governors across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories to reduce electricity consumption and carbon emissions.
The smart governors have Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities and solar power systems that have also been integrated to supply renewable energy to these smart governors.
Towngas aims to double the number of smart governors from 100 to 200 next year, and this expansion is projected to generate an annual reduction of over 6,000 kWh in electricity consumption and 3,100 kg in carbon emissions, equivalent to planting about 250 trees.
Rita Chiu Wai-ting, Senior Engineer from the Distribution Operation Department of Towngas, explained that the smart governors use cutting-edge Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology for wireless data transmission.
“This technology comes with remarkable features such as low power consumption, low cost, and long-range communication capabilities. With NB-IoT, there is no longer a need for personnel to physically inspect the governors, as the technology allows for round-the-clock monitoring of their operational status, ensuring convenience and efficiency,” read the statement.
