Hong Kong bolsters inspection on Taiwan food products

Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow said the Government will strengthen checks on food from Taiwan.

If contaminated food products are still being sold, the Government will escalate measures and use existing regulations to control the sale of these products if necessary.

Speaking to the media after attending a World No Tobacco Day 2011  ceremony, Dr Chow said both the Department of Health and the Centre for Food Safety have escalated their vigilance in monitoring the situation of the food contamination incidents in Taiwan closely.

He said the Government is getting information from the Taiwan authority and from importers of these products. According to information from the Taiwan authority, the incident is widespread in many aspects of food ingredients, involving not only drinks, but also drugs.

Dr Chow said the communication between the departments and retailers is important - and most of the contaminated products are not currently sold in Hong Kong.
