Restaurant receipts climbed 3.5% to $24.3b

As restaurant purchases dipped 0.5%.

According to the Census & Statistics Department, the value of total receipts of the restaurants sector in the first quarter rose 3.5% year-on-year to $24.3 billion.

Total purchases by restaurants dropped 0.5% to $8.5 billion for the same period. After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the volume of total restaurant receipts fell 0.9% year-on-year.

Analysed by type of restaurant, total receipts of Chinese restaurants increased 0.4% in value but decreased 3.9% in volume.

Total receipts of non-Chinese restaurants rose 7.9% in value and 3.3% in volume while total receipts of fast food shops grew 4% in value, but fell 0.5% in volume.

Total receipts of miscellaneous eating and drinking places increased 9.5% in value and 3.6% in volume. As for bars, total receipts dropped 2.3% in value and 6.3% in volume.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the volume of total restaurant receipts decreased 2.2% in the first quarter compared with the preceding quarter.
