Tobacco duty to increase by 41.5%

The Government tabled the Dutiable Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2011 at the Legislative Council.

According to Hong Kong Information Services Department, Tobacco duty will increase 50 cents a cigarette.

The order gives provisional legal effect to the proporsal for four months.

The long-term objective of tobacco-control policy is to curb cigarette consumption, said the Government. It also aims to further reduce smoking prevalence in Hong Kong.
