University of Hong Kong adopts AI-driven reconstructive surgery

The procedure utilises a platform powered by a large multimodal model for medicine.

A team from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong, in collaboration with United Imaging Intelligence (UII), has adopted artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted oral and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery.

The procedure utilises the uAI MERITS platform, which stands for “Metaverse Ecosystem for Robotic Intervention, Therapy, and Surgery".

In line with this, the mandibular reconstruction surgery makes use of the UII Discover - Runoff CTA system that facilitates the reconstruction of a 3D model of the lower limb's arteries, bones, and skin through a multimodal view.

Meanwhile, the platform is powered by a large multimodal model for 3D image and video registration, prospective projection, and dynamic visual tracking intraoperatively.

This allows it to provide a real-time projection that aligns with the 3D reconstruction from the CTA system with the patient's surgical site.
