1 in 2 Hong Kongers prefer to travel to unknown places: report
47% of Hong Kong travellers are open to discovering new places with strangers.
A 2024 study noted the purpose of travel has significantly shifted, with over half of Hong Kongers wanting to explore and immerse themselves in the unknown.
According to Booking.com’s Travel Predictions 2024, 52% of Hong Kong travellers said they are interested in booking trips where the destination remains a mystery until they arrive. More than half of them prefer discovering hidden gems and immersing themselves in local culture.
Discovering places with strangers was also not a problem as 47% of Hong Kong travellers said they are open to such.
Aside from this, 78% of Hong Kong travellers believe in transforming into their best selves while exploring the world, Booking.com said.
“From seeking deeper connections and self-discovery to strengthening bonds with partners (20%), and healing heartbreak overseas (51%), travel has become a transformative force,” it added.

In Q4 2023, Booking.com said it recorded a surge in mobile app bookings, which accounted for 53%.
“Booking Holdings Inc. witnessed a remarkable 46% year-on-year increase in airline ticket bookings during the fourth quarter, driven by the continuous growth of different offerings. Furthermore, the alternative accommodation room nights for the full year of 2023 experienced an impressive 24% year-on-year surge,” Booking.com added.
