Hong Kong signs IT pact with the Mainland

The ministry also announced that unicorn startup SenseTime will set up an AI-powered platform.

Secretary for innovation & technology Nicholas Yang has inked an arrangement with his Mainland counterpart Vice Minister of Science & Technology Zhang Jianguo to enhance innovation and technology cooperation between the two territories.

The Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST) and the Innovation & Technology Bureau have also inked a deal on commencing jointly funded projects.

It was also announced that Chinese AI unicorn SenseTime would establish the National Open Innovation Platform for Next Generation Artificial Intelligence on Intelligent Vision.

“The arrangement and the agreement signed today mark a new page of scientific and technological collaboration between the Mainland and Hong Kong,” chief executive Carrie Lam said in a statement as she witnessed he signing of the deal.

Beijing earlier committed to setting up two state-backed laboratories in Hong Kong's science park led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Mainland has also pledged to establish a Greater Bay Area (GBA) academicians’ alliance which will be made up of top academics from Macau, Guangdong and some 40 Hong Kong members of either the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
