Bill strengthening Hong Kong’s cybersecurity underway

This comes amidst threats of cyberattacks on China.

The Hong Kong government is drafting a measure that will strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure amidst continuing threats of cyberattacks.

“The Government is currently making preparatory work to clearly define the cybersecurity obligations of operators of critical infrastructure through legislation, with a view to strengthening the cyber security of critical infrastructure in Hong Kong,” Secretary for Innovation and Technology Alfred Sit said.

Sit was speaking before the Legislative Council, which was tackling issues of plans to launch cyberattacks on China to hit operations of its government as well as Hong kong.

He also noted that at present, Hong Kong has no existing legal requirements on cybersecurity of critical infrastructure.

“In formulating relevant cyber security standards, reference will also be made to standards adopted by other jurisdictions and around the world,” Sit said.

“The government intends to launch a public consultation exercise by the end of this year.”
