HKCERT warns against phishing sites

Hackers masquerade phishing sites as online shops to steal private data.

The Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) reminded users to stay vigilant from phishing attacks after receiving reports of cyberattacks from fake websites.

The city's cybersecurity incident response centre said that hackers created phishing websites pretending to be local online shops, such as HKTVmall and OpenRice, and sites for local government services, such as the HKeToll and the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme, to steal users' sensitive information, such as credit card number and bank information.

HKCERT advised the users to adopt security measures, such as not providing any sensitive information to unknown senders if they received any suspicious email, checking the legitimacy of the online shop's social media page through a verification badge function, adopting anti-phishing features in their web browsers, and using the CyberDefender Scameter search engine to identify online frauds.
