Hong Kong art sale raises almost four times more than expected

Sotheby’s Chinese fine-painting sale earned HK$738.3m, the highest for that category.

The presale estimate was HK$200m.

A Bloomberg report said, “Yesterday’s top-selling lot was Zhang’s 1961 color picture ‘Self Portrait in the Yellow Mountains.’ The ink-and-water work fetched HK$46.6m, nearly four times its high estimate of HK$12m.”

The bidding lasted for almost 12 hours and involved 364 lots.
