Siemens wins Business Services Award at IBA 2019 with MindSphere

The German giant’s open cloud-based IoT operating system helps lay the foundation for Hong Kong’s smart city evolution.

Siemens has won in the Business Services category of the International Business Awards 2019 with its open cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) operating system MindSphere which aims to co-create a smart city in Hong Kong in collaboration with the stakeholders in the city. The annual award recognises the most outstanding international companies operating in Hong Kong.

MindSphere from Siemens connects customers’ products, plants, systems, and machines, enabling them to harness the wealth of data with advanced analytics. It provides access to a growing number of apps and a dynamic development platform as a service or PaaS, and is designed for wide accessibility. Its business services range from consulting, where consultants provide both on-site and remote support, starting from transferring data from production assets to MindSphere, selecting the applications for enterprise to even developing custom applications.

For businesses that are only starting to explore the potential of IoT, the company also offers workshops for MindSphere, where experienced experts will work with executives to co-create ideas that could lead to new revenue streams and business intelligence.

Since the setup of Smart City Digital Hub at Hong Kong Science Park in 2017, Siemens has ramped up the rollout for MindSphere in collaboration with various infrastructure providers, including HKSTP, CLP, MTR, SCC and VTC to co-create an innovative ecosystem as well as jointly tackle city challenges on the aspects of smart energy, smart mobility and smart buildings.

The company has also been keen to tap into the wealth of talent in Hong Kong, establishing the MindSphere Academy that provides advanced IoT training. More than 250 engineers, academia and CXOs have undergone the training on managing digital transformation locally. To further accelerate the digital transformation, earlier this year, Siemens established its Smart City Developer Community to provide education, foster networking, and strategic partnership, as well as develop smart city co-creation. Apart from organising workshops and seminars that will develop local talent capable of creating scalable digital solutions, the company has also engaged with the community where best practices and lessons learned are shared and applied.

The HKB International Business Awards, presented by Hong Kong Business, was held on 27 August 2019 at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong.
