Public housing supply still short of ten-year target by 43,000 units

The target for public housing supply is set at 280,000 units and subsidised-sale flats.

The Hong Kong government currently falls short of its target to provide sufficient public housing for the next decade as it holds only 237,000 units which is 43,000 less than the ten-year supply target, according to Secretary for Transport & Housing Frank Chan. 

"We are going to find more land in order to expedite the delivery of public rental housing or public housing. We all know that the provision of land is basically at (a) bottle neck in terms of housing supply," Chan said in a press briefing on December 20, adding that the government is looking into middle to long-term alternatives to find more land supply in an effort to streamline the delivery of public rental housing. 

The government’s 10-year housing supply target is set at 460,000 units with 180,000 for private housing; 200,000 for public rental housing and 80,00 for subsidised-sale flats. 

Chan added that the government has plans to aid people to buy their own housing units through the “Starter Homes” plan which will be announced in mid-2018.
