Cyber crime wave threatens Hong Kong

Cyber crime cases jumped 37% in 2012.

The Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation, Ltd also reported that cyber crime cases inflicted losses of US$43.8 million. Most cyber crime cases in the city are either “spamvertising” or phishing attacks.

“Today's cyber criminals are trying out more new tricks and are doing so more frequently. At the same time, demand for Internet services is on the rise,” said HKIRC CEO Jonathan Shea.

“Despite the fact that we can continually maintain a low level of .hk spamvertising and phishing websites, we must always be vigilant against the potential threat of malicious websites.”
