Hong Kong International Terminals unveils remote-controlled cranes

The facilities upgrade aims to boost Hong Kong as a leading regional port hub.

In its bid to be the region’s leading transshipment port, Hong Kong International Terminals Limited has debuted remote-controlled, rubber-tyred gantry cranes and automated container stacking systems for Container Terminal 9 North in Tsing Yi as part of an overall facilities upgrade.

According to a press release, the remote crane operations will bring about higher operational efficiency and productivity and provide for increased industrial safety for the crane operators as the technology enables operations in indoor setups instead of within crane cabins.

This will also result in reduced carbon emissions and cleaner working environments for the operators.

This latest development makes CT9 North the first container terminal in Hong Kong enabling remote operations for yard cranes and full automation of container stacking.

The facilities upgrade also equips each crane with 58 monitoring cameras and sensors to ensure high levels of precision. It is also connected to a terminal database for enhanced monitoring of container handling.
