Revamped All-new SPA Chassis for Unforgettable Vehicle Silhouette and Spacious Cabin
The New Volvo S60 and V60 come with the all-new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture), shared with XC60 and flagship 90 Series. Thanks to the SPA chassis, the S60 and V60’s vehicle length, width, and height are respectively 4,761mm/1,850mm/1,437mm and 4,761mm/1,850mm/1,432mm, an increase in height by 126mm, decrease in width by 16mm and 15mm, and a lowered height by 47mm and 52mm, making for more dynamic silhouettes and more ideal proportions. In addition, the two vehicles’ wheelbase has been markedly lengthened from previous generations’ 2,776mm by 96mm, reaching 2,872mm, the longest in the class. The rear leg room has as a result been lengthened by 44mm, leading all competitors in cabin spaciousness and comfort.
The luggage compartment of V60 has also been enhanced, capacity has increased from previous generation’s 430L to 529L; the capacity will further expand to 1,441L when rear backrest are folded. In addition, the 60/40 split folding rear backrests yield a more versatile use of space, catering to the needs of various journeys.
On the exterior, the designer has given the front of the vehicle a broader, flatter shape to accentuate the dynamism of the S60 and V60. Meanwhile, the iconic Volvo Thor’s Hammer LED headlights not only give focus to the vehicle front, but they also exude a strong sense of technology. The vehicles’ silhouette is a perfect medley of dynamics and power, with broad shoulder lines and sculpted swage lines that unify the contours of the vehicle; with outward wheel arches, not only highlighting the muscular power of the S60 and V60, but also makes for an extra appealing golden ratio. To echo the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, the two vehicles are equipped with different C-shaped LED rear lights, so that they are strongly identifiable even in the darkness of night. The dual exhaust system and dynamic rear bumper design give shape to a sculpted vehicle rear, so that the all-new S60 and V60 stand out whether in motion or at rest, with a strong sense of individual style.
Simplistic Style and Fine Details Merge Perfectly with Technology, Unique Scandinavian Cabin Design for Love at First Sight
The New Volvo S60 and V60 inherit Volvo’s principle putting humans first in vehicle innovations, and have deliberately brought a sense of home to the S60 and V60 cabin, such that the owners will sense the harmony and relaxing atmosphere once they climb on board, making every journey as comfortable and at ease as being at home. As a Swedish luxury brand, Volvo is meticulous on all aspects of the cabin. The cockpit design enhances the cabin’s spaciousness, while the 9-inch Sensus Connect centre display with touchscreen and Apple CarPlay, in line with the usage habits and logic of today’s smartphones, make it easy to operate. The air vents on either side of the digital instrument panel are also vertically designed, decorated with metallic materials for a touch of simplistic luxe of Scandinavian feel. The centre console is also designed to be slightly tilted towards the driver, without a need to make an effort in learning to operate, putting humans first.
In terms of technology, The New Volvo S60 and V60’s T5 variant is equipped with a 12.3-inch driver display (8-inch in T4 variant) that shows relevant driver information, including navigation, multimedia, and driving information; combined with the 9-inch vertical touchscreen, minimize physical buttons while facilitating the driver’s functional and informational needs .The Head-up Display on T5 variant keeps driver’s eyes on the road, improving driving safety. Both the S60 and V60 are standard-equipped with climate system (2-zone on T4, 4-zone on T5) with CleanZone cabin air purifying system, effectively filtering dangerous fumes and PM2.5 particles, keeping the cabin air always fresh. The fresh air and the standard-equipped panoramic sunroof bring forth a driving pleasure that is forward-looking, and bound to make every journey a pleasant one.
All-new Chassis and Tuning, Perfect Balance between Ultimate in Handling and Comfort
In a marked contrast with the calm and comfort of the flagship 90 Series, engineers had driving pleasure and dynamic fun written in the DNA of the 60 Series during development. In The New Volvo S60 and V60, the Dynamic chassis (T4 Momentum and T5 Inscription) has been intricately fine-tuned, including a strongly fortified suspension system (480N/mm→800N/mm), dampened recoil/compression ratio, further tilted outwards the camber angle of the front alloy double wishbone suspension for better driving performance, and adjusted the toe angle for better brake stability. On the other hand, Sport chassis is standard on T5 R-Design, lowers the ride height by 12mm, along with the stiffer springs and stabilizer bar, further enhance the driving feeling of R-design. The more acute suspension response and support also contribute to a more agile vehicle dynamic.
The New Volvo S60 and V60 uses Volvo’s Drive-E engine, an immense source of pride for Volvo which has also been adopted by other series. The engine available in Hong Kong are the T4 (front-wheel drive) and T5 (all-wheel drive), both of which are equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, giving the T4 a maximum output of 190hp and 300Nm of torque, sprinting from 0-100km/h in 7.1s (S60) and 7.2s (V60). In the T5, the maximum output is 250hp with 350Nm peak torque, accelerating from rest to 100km/h in merely 6.4s (S60) and 6.5s (V60). Paired with 8-speed Geartronic™ automatic transmission, Momentum and Inscription can easily shift between gears by using gear knob, while R-Design can also switch gears by using the paddle on steering wheel. Besides outstanding performance, both powertrain are also fuel efficient, with the T4 registering a fuel consumption at 7.1 L (S60) and7.3 L (V60) per 100km, considering T5 with an extra 60hp and all-wheel-drive, it only consumes 7.5 L (S60) and 7.7L (V60) fuel per 100km.
Safety for You and Me, IntelliSafe Safeguards Every Journey
Since Volvo’s establishment in 1927, safety has always remained in the core of the brand principle. Volvo has been a leader in safety ever since, and through years of continued innovation, relentlessly improving motor vehicle safety technology, protecting vehicle owners and their loved ones on every journey. One of the visions of Volvo is that by 2020, no one will be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car. To achieve this vision, The New Volvo S60 and V60 are equipped with IntelliSafe safety and driver assistance technology, including active safety, driving assistance, and passive safety.
In terms of active safety, the standard-equipped CitySafety™ is the first among similar automatic braking and steering assist safety systems in detecting other vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and large animals. Other standard systems on board include Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Run-Off Road Mitigation, and more, so that risk of accidents can be effectively reduced and decreasing the potential harm. In driving assistance, the S60 and V60 are equipped with Lane Keeping Aid and Auto High Beam, while the T5 variant also comes with Adaptive Cruise Control and Road Sign Information, so that the multitude of assistance systems can ease the driver’s burden, leaving more time to enjoy driving pleasure.
Furthermore, in terms of passive safety, not only have the vehicles been tested thoroughly for safety technologies at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, but data collected by an accident investigation team established more than 50 years ago has enabled Volvo to be well-versed in understanding vehicle structure and the use of steel, both of which are key in ensuring protection of the vehicle body during a collision. The New Volvo S60 and V60 use the highest grade boron steel on the entire vehicle body, warranting the completeness of the vehicle body and protecting the driver and passengers. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with airbags and WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) to minimize whiplash injuries. From active avoidance of accidents to passive protection in case of accidents, IntelliSafe safeguards the driver, passengers, and other road users.
