Port cargo throughput down by 2.8% YoY in Q1

Inward cargo declined by 5.3%, whilst outward cargo rose by 1.9%.

Hong Kong’s total cargo throughput in the first quarter declined by 2.8% year-on-year (YoY) to 41.2 million tonnes, according to data from the Census and Statistics Department.

Of the total, inward port cargo decreased by 5.3% YoY to 26.2 million tonnes whilst outward port cargo posted a 1.9% YoY uptick to 15 million tonnes.

On a seasonally-adjusted quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis, total throughput dipped by 2.5%, with the inward port cargo declining by 0.5% and outward cargo by 5.8%.

For port cargo, seaborne cargo was down by 12.3% YoY to 27.3 million tonnes, whilst river cargo rose 23.4% YoY to 13.9 million tonnes.

Containers handled by Hong Kong also decrease by 7.4% YoY to 3.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) during the first quarter as laden containers declined by 9.3% to 2.72 million TEUs and empty containers climbed by 1% to 0.71 million TEUs.
