Tencent unveils plan to ease Greater Bay Area travel through WeChat

Travel permits and IDs would be linked to the app to facilitate border crossing.

Bloomberg reports that Tencent Holdings is working with the Chinese government to create an electronic pass system with the goal of easing travel between Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong.

Multiple documents would be linked to the WeChat app to facilitate border crossings between the three territories that still require special travel permits.

The e-card program will use the WeChat feature, “mini program,” allowing its 1b userbase to link their Chinese ID card to their travel permits.

The move is the the latest example of how the country’s tech behemoths are increasingly becoming facilitators for the government as a new generation of tycoons become de facto ambassadors for their country.
